DALI, Zigbee or Matter: choosing the right lighting module

Understand DALI-2 relays, dimmers, LED strip controllers and gateways before integrating lighting with Home Assistant.

A protocol does not define the electrical output

DALI controls lighting over a dedicated bus, Zigbee uses a radio network, and Matter provides interoperability over transports such as Wi-Fi or Thread. None of those names tells you whether a product switches a load, dims mains power or drives a low-voltage LED strip.

Identify the luminaire, supply and driver first. Relays, dimmers and gateways are not direct substitutes.

Compare the actual functions

A DALI-2 relay can switch a load without dimming it. A phase-cut dimmer needs a compatible driver and load. RGB, RGBW and CCT controllers require matching strips and power supplies.

A DALI-to-Zigbee or Matter gateway links systems, but its address capacity, supported lighting types and exposed functions must be checked.

Check Home Assistant support

Look up the exact Zigbee model in your integration. For Matter, check the transport requirements: a Thread device needs a compatible border router.

Retain a local control when the automation server is offline. Test power restoration behaviour and low-level dimming before fitting several rooms.

Keep electrical installation safe

Mains work must comply with applicable rules and be performed by a competent person. Load type, inrush current and installation conditions matter as well as the advertised maximum power.

Check neutral requirements, bus wiring, strip supply and thermal limits. Validate one test circuit before repeating the installation.

Common questions

Does a DALI-2 relay dim a lamp?

Not necessarily. A relay switches a load. Dimming requires a suitable device and a load compatible with its dimming method.
