Zigbee irrigation and soil moisture: safer watering with Home Assistant

Plan a connected irrigation system: valve compatibility, soil sensor calibration, radio coverage, cycle limits and safe shutoff.

Separate measurement from water control

A soil sensor observes one location; a valve controls water flow. Plant type, soil, depth and flow rate still matter. Begin with a moisture alert and a measured manual watering cycle before enabling automatic control.

Check actual valve closure before relying on an unattended system.

Choose a compatible chain

A Zigbee valve needs a compatible coordinator and reliable coverage at the tap. Check the exact model in your integration: a Zigbee label does not guarantee that ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT exposes every function.

An analogue Grove probe needs a controller and firmware. A LoRaWAN probe needs a gateway and network server. These architectures are not interchangeable.

Calibrate in the actual substrate

Record the dry-soil reading, then the reading after representative watering and drainage. Use those observations to define useful thresholds. A displayed percentage is not necessarily a laboratory measurement of volumetric water content.

Place the probe at the relevant depth, away from the water jet. Respect immersion limits and protect exposed electronics.

Limit every watering cycle

Every opening needs a maximum duration and a closing mechanism that does not depend on receiving a new soil reading. Set a delay between cycles and suspend operation when data is unavailable, batteries are low or rain is confirmed.

Test network loss and restart behaviour. Keep access to the manual tap and verify pressure, thread and outdoor protection on the manufacturer's specifications.

Common questions

Can one soil probe control the whole garden?

It only observes its own location. Different soils or plants can need separate measurements. Always limit valve opening time.
